Answer

Most of the POWs are not getting book or movie deals. I am going to assume that Lynch had a better story.

If I ever serve in the military, I'll remember to write a book on all the exciting fighting back and forth and then get filthy rich! Thats the american way!

I am still failing to see how Lynch has a better story than Shoshana.

I'm still failing to see how Lynch has a story at all. She was in a car wreck then spent time in the hospital, where aparently she was looked after and then an Iraqi came and told us where she was so we could orchestrate a made for TV rescue. Shoshana was a true POW, but I guess an attractive white, young white girl sells more books, that's the sad truth of the society we live in.

She was returned with another group of POWs. They were picked up on the side of the road if memory serves me correctly. Lynch got her own special raid to get her back.

Let's see,

Female POW both legs broken, rescued - Jessica
Female POW both legs shot, rescued - Shoshana

Can't use the rape since that only came out yesterday and dosen't explain Americas infatuation with Jessicas story over Shoshanas

So are you saying if Shoshana looked like Halle Berry her story would have been bigger than Jessicas? I don't think you quite get it.

Yes, If she was hot the media would have been all over her.

The same reason the nation is obsessed with Laci Peterson, while other women who have dissapeared in similar circumstances were basically ignored other than locally. Pretty white woman.

There is more to it than that, as there are a lot of pretty white women who disappear under similar circumstances who get no media attention. Even pretty white pregnant women. Maybe they have to be wealthy, and live in a high profile city... no way to know.

Lynch can thank the Pentagon propaganda machine. The hype surrounding her rescue made this a story beyond the facts. Although she criticizes the government's handling of the affair, she apparently has no qualms about capitalizing on it.

DOD duplicity aside . . . if Johnson looked like Halle Berry I imagine she would be cashing in like a bandit . . . instead of the 50% disability she's currently receiving. A mob of Rick Braggs would be falling over themselves to "produce" a story.

Didn't Rick Bragg get fired from the New York Times for making things up? Or was that another Rick Bragg?

Most definitely. A good looking poster child for reality TV almost always draws the crowd in. Unfortunately for Shoshana Johnson, she doesn't quite fit the role in this respect.

Anyway, this whole idea of selling one's military service to Hollywood disgusts me. SGT Alvin York was the only one them who did it right.

I think he 'resigned' when it was found out he was using a freelancer to write his stories for him..

...funny how Lynch is upset with the way her story was portrayed, yet has slots on Prime Time and major news networks...and, of course, her book deal. Wonder if all this newfound wealth also has her upset...

Yeah, I think that has a lot to do with the press latching onto it also. Another big factor in this case is the fact that Jessica Lynch has a baby-face, making her look a bit like a 10 year old. Nothing draws media attention quicker than an injured child.

My local newspaper, the Lawton Constitution refused to put a missing persons report in the paper when my daughter disappeared because "there are too many runaways and it wastes thier time" so they forced us to wait 2 long agonizing weeks. Talk about some sh!t! :| A real crushing blow for horrified parents. We were able to get the local TV station to air it after 3 days by begging them over the phone.

This doesn't surprise me. The average american is as superficial as they are stupid. GI barbie get treated as a great hero for crashing her vehicle, killing the passenger, and spends the war in dreamland in a hospital while a more average looking woman who had a more active role in the war is fading into obscurity.

l'm going to follow this up with another example. Remember the couple in Iowa who gave birth to septuplets. Companies all over the country donated tons of stuff to them including diapers, food, clothes, furniture cars and a house. There was also another couple in Washington DC who gave birth to septuplets who didn't get squat.

Bummer...

However, the last time I checked, companies in America aren't required to donate money and goods to every family that has septuplets. Just because they do it for one doesn't mean they have to do it for another.

The same rational can be applied to the Jeesica Lynch/Shoshana Johnson situation. Jessica Lynch may not have a great story, but U.S. companies know they will make a lot of money with it. Shoshana Johnson doesn't have a good story either, and U.S. companies know they will not make a lot of money with it. The fact that they chose to go with Jessica Lynch is smart business, not racism, as some would have us believe. Plus, didn't Jessica Lynch's unfortunate situation occur before Shoshana Johnson's?

Americans really need to drop this whole mentality of entitlement. My goodness.

Actually no, it didn't. The only reason we know about Shoshana Johnson is because they aired the names and pictures of her whole unit that was captured, as I believe they were the first group of captured soliders in the war. The media never latched onto the one female in the group in that case. Can anyone here name other captured members of Jessica Lynch's group which was NOT the first captured?
