Can you help, please? Laptop slimline DVD drive with MINI ATX mobo possible?

Maybe you can help me on one thing I am not familliar with. That is a laptop. Can you use a slimline dvd type player out of one in a small mini atx type desktop computer. My son is working on a small project of setting up a mini case with a atx board and only has enough space for a slimline type drive to fit into the case. A full size dvd will not fit. Can a slimline be adapted to work. Since I don't use a laptop I don 't know if this will work.

Yes, with an adapter for slim -> IDE.
