Can you have the same exact IP as someone else if you're on a cable connection?

In a word, no. IP's are unique by design, however there are some exceptions. There are 3(?) different networks that are all designated as private and will not route on the internet. The 2 that I can remember are these

192.168.x.x
10.0.x.x (might be 10.x.x.x)
and one more, someone correct me on that part.

These are the IP ranges that NAT firewall/routers use. So in another word, it is possible that you and your buddy's computer on different routers will both have the IP 192.168.0.2

So I mean if the other person did something illegal and then they decide to trace it to you, YOU can get busted?

That's weird.

I was just at this site, and some guy asked "How come other people are posting under the same IP as me?"

Either he's stupid, and has two personalities, or I guess like you said, a buddy of his has the same IP.

Just wondering, thanks!

It could be that, and somehow the software of the bbs is crappy. I'm sure that the logs here show my real IP regardless of the fact that my computer claims it is 192.168.0.2.

Another possibility is that the ISP that the users are all on has some kind of screwy proxy or something going on.

Hi Nerd, I'll try to answer you question. There's a few reasons why someone might be posting under the same IP as someone else. Here are three that comes to mind:

1) Cable Connection Uses Dynamic IP not Static
2) Same Proxy Server being used hence same IP when posting (in that case the IP would be the Proxy Server IP and not your cable modem IP)
3) Modifying packet headers... ie. spoof the packet so it looks like it came from another IP

I hope that helps.
