Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond and give suggestions. I see a few folks poked a little fun at the "hardcore gamer" part of my thread title. Sorry, those words were the first to come to mind at the time. :)

Since you've been away so long I'd recomend watching steam for sales. You can pick up some of the older games you've missed for $5 or $10 on sale. They should have a halloween sale next months (horror games) so I'd check out:

Bioshock
Left 4 Dead 2 (Don't bother with the first since all the maps are being ported over)
Metro 2033

All the above should be $5 on sale. If you haven't played Half Life 2 then I'd recommend the orange box when it's on sale.
And don't forget Bioshock 2 that i'm sure by now has a nice price. didn't played it in multiplayer but i have the feeling you can have a blast with it

Nope.

Nothing has been made to replace Q/UT. Sorry. Best bet is to buy the latest iteration of both and play away.

Pretty much this.

The only MP FPS shooters now are, for the most part, team based squad games that try to implement realistic physics. Its been years since a fast paced MP shooter has been released, maybe BF3 will fill that void.

I was a quake addict myself, nothing has really filled that void since.

Why would BF3 fill that void, it is the exact norm you just described.

As for the topic, does Painkiller have an active online community anymore?

Crysis Wars is very fast (especially on modded servers - where increasing speed and allowing non-draining speed suit functionality are common). I'm not surprised that a lot of the best players there have a CounterStrike background (some servers are even running Aztec and Dust map recreations made from the CryEngine2 editor).

Unfortunately the community is pretty much dead now. Shame...I still love playing Wars when I can find a server with enough people on it.

Yeah I was gonna say, Painkiller has a very "Quake-y" multiplayer. Not sure if it's still played though.

Been a console gamer for years. Getting a new computer with decent specs and want to get back into PC gaming. During the era I was a PC gamer, Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 were really big and I loved both games. Are there any modern games that have the same kind of characteristics as these legendary games? I mainly like FPS type games, but am open to other types too. Thanks for any and all suggestions. :)

Unfortunately, arena-style FPS is pretty much dead. The Unreal Tournament series was killed off by consolization, which is why UT3 is a flop. Your best bet might actually be to play UT99 and UT 2004 with the remaining UT player base.

Tried Xonotic for a bit last night (against bots), and was fairly impressed.

Too bad there aren't many active games going on yet. Seems like IRC pickups are the norm at the moment.

Kind of feel like the game deserves its own thread. Just needs more exposure. Then again, us arena-heads are probably aware of such freebies already, heh.

What happened to UT2003? Was it just overshadowed / forgotten about after UT2004?

2003 dumped a lot of favorite modes like assault. 2004 brought them back.
I didnt care much for Double domination myself, those games could go on forever if the players were too evenly matched. It got annoying. Domination HAD to end because somebody was always building up points towards the goal. If you wanted a long game you just set the score really high, like 400.
Also you could have 4 teams instead of just two, which was fun sometimes.

I did like monster invasion though, and Onslaught was pretty cool, better than Double Domination. 2003 didnt have those, at least not that I recall. In retrospect I only put about twenty hours into 2003 and a shitload more into 2004.

UT 2003 was an Epic failure and it angered and alienated many UT99 fans. It really sucked because the hype leading up to UT 2003's release (in the UT community) was huge and it was eagerly anticipated. I don't remember all of the problems it had, but people very much preferred UT99 over it.

Quake 3 is still being played online today, but it's now called quake live, and they made it into a browser game.

My apologies for bringing back my semi-old thread. I just wanted to thank you for letting me know about quake live. ive been playing it constantly since my new PC arrived. Brings me back to my golden years of pc gaming.

Hi and yes I did! I thought it was ok and im going to play it more. I guess im kind of stuck in time where pc games are concerned. I just cant stop playing Quake 3 haha. My PC arrived recently with more then decent gaming specs, so im going to have to buy at least some some modern games to see all the new eye candy modern games have to order.
