Can you guys recommend a good nForce4 Ultra mobo?

I'm upgrading to an X2 and my son is getting my 3500+. I needs a good nForce4 motherboard.

I've already decided not to go with a SLI board. I'd prefer Asus if they make a good stable nForce4 Ultra board.

Thanks,

For Asus you'd probably want the A8N-E, but I haven't used one long enough to say anything other than they work. I'll let you know how my new Epox 9NPA+ Ultra turns out later today.

Pass on the Asus. I had horrible luck with their BIOSes. I'm on an Abit AN8-SLI. GREAT board for the money too by the way.

Is that the Fanless one ?

I looked at that one, but was concerned the Caps by the end of the PCIex slot would pose problems with the PCIex card.

BroadbandGamer,

I didn't (and don't) plan on using/getting an SLI board either, but I wanted at least the functions of the Ultra4 Chipset. I also didn't want
to worry about a Chipset fan noise/failure issue so common on the 939's.

I ended up getting this one as I got it for about the same as the Deluxe version. I've been seeing them cheaper than the Deluxe version
pretty much too these days.

Yes, mine is a passively cooled one. Ironically mine just died due to a failed BIOS update (and some ill-advised OC settings). The thing that keeps me from getting a DFI even today is that chipset fan. That was the worst fan of any I've ever had in my PC on the Asus. 8000rpm! I could hear it above all 2-3 hard drives (I have 6 now but forget how many at the time), 2 video cards with stock coolers, and 2 120mm fans. That was nuts, plus it didn't work worth spit. It still roasted. Whatever board you get, do yourself a favor and get a passively cooled one or invest in a high-profile huge cooler with a fan that's bigger so it doesn't have to run so bloomin loud. You'll be glad you did. I'm planning on getting another of those Abit boards though.

My preferred choice is the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum... Very stable, a lot of features, and it overclocks VERY good...

Here you have a good comparison... The winners are the MSI 😉, or the much more expensive Abit Fatal1ty AN8...

If you're open to something else, the Asrock 939 dual sata2 should do great. I had an nforce4 and changed for that board. no regret at all. Fast, stable and ...quiet..... Once you tried a fanless board, you won't go back to a board that scream it's presence ..

I got my Epox set up and it's been absolutely perfect. There is a reason it was the Editors' Choice at Anandtech.

MDE, don't you have a problem with the power connections on the Epox board? There are in the middle of the board. I keep looking at this board, until I see the layout and then I just pass again. I'm using an OCZ Modstream with the EMI cables, and they don't bend real nice like unbraided cables do, and I just have to think that this would be a major hurdle to overcome.

No, but I'm using an Antec P180, so I just snake the cable in front of the PCI\PCIe slots.

Same here...I really like the Ultra X-Connect modular power supply and the ATX cable is pretty stiff. If you've got a really big case...seems there's enough room to stretch out the ATX power cable so it wouldn't put excessive sideways pressure on the ATX connector with the Epox board. If your case is smallish and you have stiff cables, I wouldn't go with the Epox board.

I had to tear apart one of my PCs due to the "bulging" cap issue on an Epox 8rda mobo and I don't know what Epox will send me back for my RMA (a repaired board, a different mobo, etc.) so I may have to do some "swapping" of parts to get the PC going again.
