Can you get STDs without actually having intimate contact?

I don't strip clubs would be in business if STDs were commonly passed this way.

Also, think about what STD stands. Certainly not 'Handshake Trasmitted Diseases.'

If certain bodily fluids are exchanged. Saliva, snot, no. Blood, semen, yes.

You can interact with a person with HIV/AIDs all day long, and even kiss them, but don't fsck around or become blood brothers.

EDIT: HIV can be passed through four bodily fluids: Link

Blood
Semen
Vaginal fluids
Breast milk

You won't get AIDS from everyday contact.
You won't get AIDS from being a friend.
You won't get AIDS from a mosquito bite.
You won't get AIDS from a kiss.
You won't get AIDS from talking.
You won't get AIDS from listening.
You won't get AIDS from a public pool.
You won't get AIDS from a toilet seat.
You won't get AIDS from donating blood.
You won't get AIDS from tears.
You won't get AIDS from a hug.
You won't get AIDS from a towel.
You won't get AIDS from a telephone.
You won't get AIDS because someone is different from you.

Sure!! Blood transfusion, sharing needles, etc are not intimate contact.

EDIT: Assuming that the sexually transmitted disease is carried in blood.

I predict a massive outpouring of ignorance in this thread.

Sharing your needle is just as bad as sharing your noodle!

There are some which you can catch and probably already have...

Example is Herpes Simplex 1 or 2 (which ever is located in the oral area).... if you ever had a cold sore... you got it. Let say someone who has it drinks from a cup and then you accidentally drink from it..... chances are you probably got it.!

Hepatitis and genital Herpes, among other commonly classified STD's, can be transmitted by means other than direct sexual contact or blood transfusion (which can happen in small amounts with needle sharing puncture wounds etc.). Hepatitis and Herpes can survive longer outside a host organism than HIV and thus more easily transferred via a contaminated surfaces, although the possibility of infection by this means is still pretty dang low...I don't worry about.

But if you know someone who has Hepatitis (my uncle got it from a blood transfusion like 15-20 years ago) you should be a little more careful, and generally, they know to look out for others as well.

HIV, as we all know, is pretty hard to contract without viral body fluid contact/inter change.

I would like to take opportunity to tell people that if you think you may been exposed to HIV, you should go straight to the hospital ER and tell them...there are a growing number of drugs which have demonstrated the ability to help kill off HIV in the early stages of infection, like the first 24 hrs. Many hospitals are already instituting use of these drugs in case of needle pricks (a doctor/nurse stabs him/herself accidentally with a used needle) as a precautionary measure.

Another question: Say you hook up with a some random chick, doesn't that multiply your chances of getting an STD by 10 fold? If that was true, a whole lot of people would have STDs right now. Also, I am talking about STD's like Herpes, Syphillis, etc, not HIV.

You can catch homosexuality just by thinking about it.

So you've turned to the dark side?

I thought there was a documented case of a lady in Florida geting it from her doctor.

Oh BTW AIDS had its first increase in 10 years.

safe sex isn't as cool as it used to be. :(

And gays are not afraid of HIV as allot of people have it and have lived for years.
In some areas it is a badge of honor (wish I could find that artical it was in USA Today.)

Dude, I know a lot of people will debate this: It isnt easy to get STDS. That chances are much smaller than people believe.

I would like to find the person that wrote that article and beat them to death with a piano. Most people read it and came away thinking something along the lines of "Gay people actually like spreading AIDS! I knew it all along!"

who the heck told ya that hooking up with a RANDOM person increases chances 10 fold? if ur hooking up with random people whos to say that all these random people have more diseases? I'm a random person and i dont have any...and im sure u could find a ton more on here...so that 10 fold figure is just some number someone pulled out their ass. if u "hook up" with someone that has something your chances of getting something are increased...but hooking up with random people ur really not increasing anything except ur pleasure factor :p

Your only real risk is contracting it from someone who doesnt know they have it. If someone is HIV positive, or has Hep-C they likely wont be having sex unprotected. 'Likley' being the key word.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.:p

Seriously, the "Oh, I'm probably going to be fine." attitude is like not wearing a helmet on a bike because "You haven't fallen in years.". I'm not going play russian roulette with something that could conceivably kill me in drawn-out, agonizing fashion......thanks.
