I was gonna say. I doubt most places would touch fiberglass since it's quite detrimental to your health to inhale it. They do sell plexi but not sure if they'll cut it for you.

Yea, but call first. I know one home depot that will do it for a flat fee, while others just sold sheets of plexiglass and pointed you towards some blades to cut it yourself.

How hard is it to cut myself? I have some extra I wanna make a case window with. Use a jigsaw? If so, what kind of blade? Or a dremel?

BTW, I need a bunch of poster frames too! I've had posters I've wanted to put up for years because I never wanted to buy that many frames. Also the cheapy poster frames fall apart.

Yep...hell even if its a piece of plexiglass and some hard carboard at the back without a frame i'd be happy. I know wal-mart sells those but they only go up to 24x36....i need 27x40. And real frames are outrageous...I'm talking over $100 each...and I'm looking for 5 of them.

Uh, no thanks! I'll take an afternoon and build some of my own somehow.

my local home depot will cut glass/plexi for you, no charge. Now flagging down someone to do it for you, that's a different story

Yep, exactly how my Home Depot is here, if you can find an employee that isn't bull$hitting with a friend or co-worker to cut it then they do it.

It's very hard to use a jigsaw to cut plexiglass. The jigsaw will make the plexiglass jump all over the place and you'll end up cracking the plexiglass before you finish your cut. This happened to me - and it was a mess.

I've never used a Dremel to cut it before either. However, if I had to do it again, I'd use a skill saw and a blade designed to cut such a product.

Why the hell don't people PM me with these ?'s?

HD will chop up a piece of plexi for ya for free. (unlimited cuts unless you are an ass, then they will tell ya to fvck off :p) Be aware not all stores have a plexi cutter. Call ahead. They can only cut rectangles. (unless you get a nice guy why is good on the machine such as myself, who can cut almost any geometric shape.

HD goes up to 48 x 96" in size. My HD also carries small arms proof .250 Lexan :p

There are 3 different kinds of plexi HD sells. If the cover plastic is blue on both sides it is the cheap stuff. It is not very scratch resistant, and is rather brittle so do not drill it. The stuff with one side blue, the other side white (remember, just the cover plastic, not the plexi) is the better stuff which is pretty scratch resistant and much more drill friendly. Top of the line is Lexan. they sell it in .125 and .250 thicknesses, with up to .500 being on order.

The .125 will stop a line drive golf ball with only 1/2" deflection on a 3' x 3' piece.

Any other questions PM me becaus eI am going to bed, and I doubt I will remember this thread tommorow.

Step 1. Find any phone. Doesn't matter weather it is on a desk or on the racking
Step 2. Pick it up.
Step 3. Dial 451*
Step 4. Wait for the beep in the phone.
Step 5. You are now talking on the PA system.

This works in any HD in the country :)

Wouldn't a Dremel spin too fast and thus start to melt the plexiglass?

Yep. It eats the bits as well. They make a special plexi cutter. It costs like $2. It is much easier to score a straight line with it as well. Like 20 times easier than a regular utility knife.

I imagine it would be really easy. Just cut it to size, drill some holes in the corners.. and buy some schnazzy hardware to bolt them together after laying your poster in there, eh?

You could even run a bead of silicone around the edge and seal it up to protect it from air etc. Might look funny though. Might look kinda cool too.

For those of you going to HD or Lowes soon, please bump this thread with prices on the sheets and sizes...i've been thinking about making poster frames as well, but that won't come to be for a while longer.

TIA. :)

I missed the banner ad that said you worked there, anyone else catch it or is it blocked in your host file too? :p But seriously, thanks for the paging info! :D

I got 3/16 plexiglass cut at my HD on the glass cutting utility but they had to score it about 5-10 times.

Another time a worker took some 3/16 to the circular saw used for wood and cut it there. Did a great job but he pissed off some other employees who said he'd ruin the blade (which he probably did). :p
