Yes it's illegal, the range is sometimes different from state to state, CA for example is 300 feet.

As far as I'm concerned, you can do whatever you want after I pass you, but before I do pass you, GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY. :D

Ambulance chasing? :p I suppose as long as you are not breaking the speed limit it's ok but chances are if you are following an emergency vehicle you are breaking the speed limit.

They don't speed around here. Everyone passes them on the expressway because they are going the speed limit.

You can follow all you want and anything you want while obeying traffic laws.

I don't know how it is with municipal EMS, but I work in private EMS and we follow the speed limit. We do go through red lights, only after making sure the intersection is clear though. Just because we have lights & sirens doesn't mean we have a free pass to drive like maniacs. :)

If I was in the back, I would tip you for you driving quickly. Get a push bumper and move the idiots out of the way. People who don't move annoy the hell out of me. It isn't like the patient is in an ambulance because they have a hangnail. The herse and funeral percession driving at 5 mph will hold you up a lot more than a 1 vehicle ambulance.
