more questions regarding my friend's home theater setup...
he wants to get HDTV and already bought a satellite system. all I know is that it's a DISH network one and the receiver has a built-in PVR. I can find more info about the satellite serivce if it would help.

- does HDTV satellite even exist?
- does DISH offer it?
- how much of the programming on it is actually HD?
- what equipment would he need to get HD programming off the satellite?

You need an HD capable receiver. That's it.

Feed the output of the receiver to the HD IN ports and you got a really pretty picture.

Both services have (or at least had) at least one "free" HD station. DTV now has them bundled for $11.00 ... if you get HBO, then you also can get the HBO HDTV feed (separate form the HD package). Showtime has HD on the sats (separate form the HD package), Discovery HD, an HDTV movie channel (PPV) and Mark Cuban's got a (mostly) sports channel and a movie channel (not PPV).

Most HD capable satellite receivers will also have an input for "OTA" (off the air) - so if you have HD broadcast in your area (most areas do now), you can get the broadcast stuff as well.

It'a wunnerful thing. Even the regular programming OTA, because there is no ghosting, no fuzz ... just clean video and (in many cases) Dobly Digital audio (or Digital Dobly ProLogic).

Good Luck

Scott

Dish network just announced that they will have better HD options on 9/16. I believe it's 4 channels for $10 a month.

Also they will be announcing a HDTV satellite PVR recevier for $999. (Actually, they did announce it, it's just not available yet.)
