Can you fry chicken etc in olive oil?

So apparently olive oil is good for you because it's monosaturated fat. Why don't people fry chicken and stuff in olive oil?

olive oil is awful for deep frying. it has lots of flavor and a low smoke point. use peanut oil, which is pretty decent for you, and has a very high smoke point, and doesn't have a lot of flavor on its own (though more than wesson)

I use olive oil for eggs. I hate the taste that butter leaves on the eggs.

Yeah its just fine for pan frying, or so it seems to me, but I wouldn't consider it for deep frying 😀

well, the main beef is that olive oil's smoke point is like 350 and peanut oil's is like 450

does olive oil that is smoking mean that it's breaking down..chemically? that is, it could be bad for you healthwise?

not all chemical reactions are necessarily bad for you. having a low smoking point means... it produces smoke[aka evaporates]... at a lower temperature. to deep fry stuff you have to have a lot of hot oil. to have it evaporating all the time would suck.

That's what I would have said.

no, i cook the eggs in the bacon grease right after i cook the bacon, i make BIG meals. i have the hash browns going in the other skillet, and pancakes on the griddle.

occasionally i'll make steak for breakfast, so no bacon grease. in that case, i go scrambled.

yes, he must learn the complexities and interplexities of cooking.

I like making up words 😉

If you're worried about the fat in bacon (and you should be)
I recommend you try some turkey bacon.
Butterball brand is the only one I like but it's super easy to cook,
just nuke it for 3 minutes or so and it's ready.
I've grown to love the taste.
Ps I've still got to have my butter,
I can't stand the taste of margarine.

if you make BIG meals, i assume that's a SH!T load of bacon grease. so that means you are ingesting all of the bacon grease with you eggs? sorry, i like my heart a little.

Olive oil in an excellent oil if used in cases not involving high heat.

But for frying -- it's best to stay away from it. Olive oil has a low smoke point, apprx. 190C. At this point, olive oil begins to degrade, forming a trans-fatty acid. That's the one of the worst kind of fats you can consume.

The best kind of fat to use for frying is a fat with a high saturated fat content (yes, goes against everything you have been taught, but nonetheless true) since it is more stable, has a higher smoke point, and is much less prone to making this conversion. Sunflower and safflower oils would be excellent choices.
