Looks to me like it got hit numerous times so either the hit box is the center of the ship or the video is fake.

Yeah I've played a game just like this, may have been this, on an emulator. The Hit box is an extremely small dot at the centre of the ship.

Looking over various forums it looks like the hitbox is at the very most a few pixels wide.

Also you can see the player does die several times.
