Can You Fly Standby the Night Before Your Flight?

I have an 11AM flight Friday morning, would I be able to check in for stand by (American Airlines) the night before, to try and get on say, a 9PM flight Thursday? Thanks.

Probably, but if your tickets for your Friday flight are non-refundable you'll probably be paying for both your standby flight and your Friday flight if you get on standby.

But the whole point of standby is to just move your ticket over. You always pay only once when you fly standby.

I thought standby was this: you show up at the airport *without* a ticket at all. And if you get on a flight then your fare is WAY less than it would have been had you bought a ticket in the first place.

I thought standby was this: you show up at the airport *without* a ticket at all. And if you get on a flight then your fare is WAY less than it would have been had you bought a ticket in the first place.

yeah that's the way it works here...they don't transfer your ticket...hence the no transfer clause on most tickets today.

I've flown standby at least a dozen times. It's when you move up your flight a couple hours and the ticket just rolls over.

Yeah but the problem is its the night before. I called. You can't do it./

You could do a midnight flight, but I'm fairly sure it has to be the same date as you are ticketed for.

there is still usually a transfer fee.

When you have a ticket, most airlines are not giving that seat up.
