Can you flash a DVDr drive under virtualization?

Except I don't have windows. I do, however, have VMWare and an XP install.

Think it's possible to flash the drive from that? If not, how the heck might I do that, short of popping it out and into someone else's computer?

Uhhh...I'm gonna have to say no on that one. Seems like something to file away under "REALLY HORRIBLE IDEA"

But that begs the question: How do you flash a drive if you don't have windows? You just don't?

been a long time since i had to flash the firmware on a dvd drive, but i do remember some offering a bootable dos flash, you could see if they have that but otherwise if its windows only then that would be the only way

I don't think I've ever had the inclination to flash the firmware on an optical drive. But yea, I'd probably end up just taking it into work and hooking it up to a Windows machine.
