Can you figure out what's wrong with my car?

My car has been making these intermittent noises that seems to be coming from the front driver side wheel area. It's sort of like a grinding noise that sometimes starts when I first press on the brake but also at random times when I'm not using the brake (there might be something that sets it off but I haven't figured out what yet). It'll last for maybe 10-15 seconds and then stop and my car seems to run fine. I haven't done a visual inspection yet, but I'm pretty dumb when it comes to cars so it probably won't help. So any ideas what it could be?

stuck caliper maybe is rubbin. But it sounds like pads. Pads generally have a wear indicator that will squeal when they start getting low.

If it were the brake pads, then why would it continue making the grinding noise even when I'm not pressing on the brakes and accellerating normally?

Because the wear indicator is just scratching along the surface, making a loud noise. When the pedal is depressed the indicator is shoved into the rotor, silencing it (or making it quieter).

Because they are probably metal-to-metal and the pad is staying in contact with the rotor all the time, or at least for a bit after you use the brakes.
