Can you explain these cards? And help me build!

Hey everyone. Lifetime console gamer, and even Apple user and ex-employee, about to build my first PC for gaming. I have roughly 1500$ for amazon, and more if I need it. (been saving)

As far as building it, I am sure I can figure it out once I buy all the parts. For the most part I have decided on some version of an i5 chip, I hear i7 is mostly for movie making, and I have an i7 in my Macbook Pro if I ever decide to make videos. THIS IS 100% GAMING.

My MAIN question here, is after a bit of research, for the cost, the 670 Nvidia card seemed to be the one to go with, tho I hear it's a bit loud at times. I don't COMPLETELY understand overclocking (superclocked, 3470v3570k, etc) .... (just like wearing a size 30 waist when you are a 34 or a 32? lol...?) However, via amazon, a much hgher ranked card the 770, seems to be only a few bucks more. It also shows fans, are there not great fans inside that closed case on the 670?

PLEASE help me understand all the numbers and info a video card has in its name, and which card to get.

GTX 770 listed here: (notice please it's not evga whatever that means)

GTX 670 listed here:

ALSO, if you feel like it, let me know your personal experience and recommendations on other parts to buy, from 8v16gb of RAM, to the tower itself.

I really want to spend around 1200 before monitor

thanks so much.

Looking forward to being part of the community.

Hello and welcome to the forums! Your problem would probably receive more answers in General Hardware, so if you don't get enough response here you can ask one of the mods to move it for you.

Now, to answer a couple of your questions.
There are several reviews on Anandtech that will describe the difference between video cards. Generally though, most cards today are extremely close in performance to other cards in their price bracket. The higher end cards usually have more speed and stream processors, which can be very helpful if you are planning to run games at high resolutions, or across more than one screen. You could probably also expect the higher end cards to play the latest games farther into the future than the lower end pieces.

RAM depends on what you will be doing with the computer. 8 GB seems to be the sweet spot for a Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC used for gaming. If you are into video editing or running virtual machines on the computer, you could very well see a benefit to more.

Overclocking: you really don't have to decide on that right now. If you think you may want to overclock in the future, get in Intel processor that ends with a K. Other models will overclock, but will limitations.

The reason I only mentioned Intel is your budget. AMD chips for desktops are not as fast as Intels, so I would just plan on getting an Intel chip since your budget allows it.

Good idea so I did it. Great minds think alike. 😉
