I just moved to San Jose, CA. Everyone here told me to drink bottled water (I used to drink tap water in Montana, everyone in MT does that). I was thinking is that possible to buy some kind of water filter to filter the tap water then drink it? Or we always have to buy the bottled water?

dang! don't buy the bottle water, too expensive! only buy that if you need to keep a bottle of water with you when you go places.

at home, you can use something like a brita water filter. mine looks like a water jug, and you just refill it with tap water when it's almost empty. they aren't too expensive and they filter out most of the harmful stuff as well as the weird smells. personally, i thought the tap water was ok to drink (in santa clara, when i was young). dunno about it now.

also, some supermarkets sell those plastic gallon jugs of purified water. these can be refilled at (purified) water stations for like a quarter each.

anyone have better suggestions? that's all i could think of at the moment.

well sj tapwater is probably pretty safe:p However, the water is most likely to be contaminated at the very last stage of the pipeline.. your tap:p Lead solder etc seeping into the water from older faucets and pipes near... = bad:p Just install a filter.. and flush for atleast 30 seconds b4 u fill for drinking water.

my god the water here sucks..
maybe it was just the dorm at SJSU last year, or maybe it's my apartment now.. but the water I find here is so full of calcium and mineral, it coats your mouth and leaves an after taste..
It leaves nasty hardwater stains in your sinks, showers, pots, pans, everything.
No way in hell would i drink that stuff.
I buy water from a water store 2 blocks away from my place... 20 cents a gallon. nice and tasty

I bought those 'Arrowhead' 2.5 gallons jug. It is around $2 each, just too expensive for water!

I've the same problem here. The hardwater stains leave an after taste if you rinse your mouth. I've to let the water runs about 20-30 seconds for the smell gets lighter :(

Where can you refill the empty jugs for about quarter/gal? This is WAYYY cheaper than what i currently spend. What kind of store should I look for in yellow book?
:):):):) PLEASE HELP ME SAVE $$$ ON WATER :):):):)

There's a bunch of water refilling stations in the South Bay. They charge 75 cents to fill up a 2.5 gallon container. These are actual stores, NOT those water dispensers you find outside of supermarkets. I know this sounds funny but their water actually TASTES good.

I know this sounds even funnier but they actually have good service. The one I go to carries your containers to/from your car (sometimes, even if you don't want them to =P), and they rinse and clean your containers as well. All for $1.50 / 5gallons. You can bring your own containers or you can purchase it from the store (reasonably priced compared to those Arrowhead jugs you keep tossin', probably pays for itself in < 10 trips).

get a PUR water filter. very inexpensive. I would not trust any tap in the U.S. and most bottled water comes from municipal supplies.

the water here (marietta, ga) is fine. so was the water in dallas, tx.

it all depends on where you live. for example, the water in houston, tx is so contaminate that you can't even use it for fish (even after you've treated it with anti-chlorine chemicals)

you can buy a water purifier that will connect to your water pipes directly under your sink so that you can get freshwater any time, however much u want. It looks like one of those skinny chrome faucets with a black base at the farside on the top of your sink. I think those things run around $50 bucks, but I could be wrong.

btw, Demon-Xanth, are you sure Bart said that? I think it was Homer...I'm trying to remember the episode they said that. I've seen every freakin episode over 20 times..i should know this :(. But I must continue my CS project first....aww, so hard to continue after thinking about this.

yeah your best bet is with the water stores.. like rlism said above, there are a bunch around SJ. The one I go to is called University Pure Water and it's right near San Jose State, on 10th and william.
And like rlism said, they have great service. They cart the big jugs back to your cart for you. And if you join their membership club, you get 100 gallons for 15 dollars which comes out to only 15cents a gallon. And it's tasty water :)
I took one of those 2.5 gallon jugs like the ones you bought, and i cut a 2inch hole on top and epoxied the top of a 1 liter soda bottle over the hole. Instant Refillable container :) (i'm a poor college student with no money to buy the big jugs at the water store)

back in my home country, were taugh (since kindergarten) that healthy water is cooked before drank. so we usually cook the water from the faucet (heat it to 100 celcius or close) before we can drink it. in some places (with no clean water) you have to filter it before you cook it.

sure enough, it was quite an experience when i first got to the states and learn to drink right off the faucet... :)

now i'm in sunnyvale, which is quite close to san jose.
i use 2 water filter, one on the faucet, and one of the brita thingy that goes into the fridge. been doing that for 4 years and still alive ... just hope i don't do that (drink off the faucet) when i go back home for a visit :)

Michael, which part of SJ are you in? The water here in South SJ is terrible.
