Can you do this with a digital camera?

connect it to your computer, set it to download pictures, and delete them from Flash cards as nessicary, then tell you camera to take consecuative pictures? (without being limited by the size of your flash card)

--just realized that I wrote 'songs' instead of pictures 😉 I must have been really tired...

i don't know. this has not actually come up... but i don't think so...

i think the connection is kinda one way, read but not write...

i know for a fact (as i was told 😛) that some cameras that can use iomega's clik discs actually have a built in clik drive which can be used as an external removable drive...

i think there is a formatting issue involved here...

My initial guess would be that no, it can't be done, but what if the flash card (or internal memory, whatever it be) was removed during this process?

K, as I understand it, digital cameras take pictures, and store them in a flash card. To get these songs from your camera to your computer, you have to either have a USB reader, or connect your camera to your computer via parallel (or USB in some cases), and through software, upload the songs (I guess I chose the wrong word before).

What I want to know is, can you dynamically upload songs to your computer? Have the cables attacked, and take pictures, and upload them to your computer at the same time you're taking them (without human interference, sort of like a timer thing...).

Referring to pictures as 'songs' has really muddied up the waters. But to answer your question, no digital camera that I know of has the simultaneous uploading capability your referring to. First, after shooting the picture it has to write the picture to the compact flash card. Then, with most digital cameras, you typically have to change the function knob from 'shooting' mode to 'pc' mode or whatever to transfer them from the camera to the computer.

How about this?

I have a Ricoh RDC-5000 with 8MB internal memory and I have since added a 16MB SmartMedia card. With my USB drivers for this camera, the internal memory and the SmartMedia *both* show up as drives in Explorer. Therefore, I *should* be able to write a little batch file that copies/moves images from the camera's memory and onto my hard drive.

***I just realized something***

OK, this may not be possible after all. My camera has a control knob that changes the mode of operation from taking pictures, to viewing pictures, to deleting pictures, to connecting to a PC. There is no way I can continuously take pictures and download them simultaneously.

Oh well.

Like StanFL said, most cameras need to be changed to "connection" mode in order to upload (or download if you will) pictures to the PC. At this time the camera is not able to take pictures. I know for a fact this is the case for my Canon S10.

Now I also know for a fact that you could do what you've described (continuosly taking pictures and uploading to the hard drive) with the CL WebCam Go, which is a "digital camera"/webcam. The picture is limited to 640/480. When this thing is connected via the USB bus, all pictures taken are transmitted directly to the hard drive.

hope this helps.

Yep, and I've been able to do the some with my Intel USB Camera Pro, but i have to say, the pictures really do suck...
😉

Thanks for your help guys!
