Can you do one handed pushups?

I've done regular pushups for a while, on and off... and I've tried various different kind of pushups. Normal ones are pretty easy now, and I can do ~40 no problem. Watching an old Rocky movie got me curious.. in part of the movie when he's training (in Russia I think) he does these one-armed pushups... the other arm behind his back, and he jumps from one arm to the other, looks easy the way he does it. I tried just a rep of regular easy looking one handed pushups... and I embarrassed myself. :p So I'm trying to get up to doing them normally by starting with negative reps which I learned about in one of my previous gym classes.

damn they're hard :(

Yes, but the way most people do them that I've seen is cheating, and I did them the same way. :p That is, using one hand on the bar, and your other hand on your wrist. I think it's cheating since you're still using force from your other arm to pull yourself up, it's just pulling on your wrist instead of the bar. It IS harder than doing regular pullups, but it's not as hard as doing ACTUAL one-handed pullups (without any help from your other arm)

Funny, but I've seen quite a few weight lifting threads and there are apparently a number of people who are in quite good shape here that actively read the forums, so I don't think posting a thread like mine is a terrible idea. See the poll results.. there are some. :p

i could probably do a handed push up, but not a one handed pull up. when i get down to like 250 i will definately have the muscle to do many sets. :)

That's what I used to say about myself as well, but for some reason watching Rocky helped me. :p

It's probably because you keep your arm in the same position as it was when you were doing regular pushups. You have to make sure your arm is well centered, and put your other arm behind your back..

I can do probably about six of them before crumbling to the floor, one hand pull-ups is still near impossible for me.

One handed push ups aren't bad. You just need to be strong relative to your body weight. It puts a lot of stress and pressure on your one arm and shoulder doing it. And hurts afterwards as theres no pressure on it anymore.

I can do them with *straight legs* as when you do them normally and not have your legs far apart. When your legs are far apart its much easier.

I've not yet seen any guy at any gym do a *one handed pull up* the proper way. Holding your other arm isn't one. One hand is only having one hand on the bar and pulling yourself up. Not even the gymnastics guy I train with can. The weight lifters can't as they have too much mass in their legs, as do I.

No way can I see a guy at 250lbs do a one handed pull up strict.

I just did one. They are pretty darn hard! You need to spread your legs a good bit to help balance. I haven't tried a one handed pullup in a long time but my thoughts are I wouldn't have a hope in hell of doing any. Fresh I can do a good dozen proper pullups with good form, but one handed ones not a chance. Only the truly L337 can do one.

lol, good replies.

well, i'm gonna try some more. i like the feeling it gives, slight soreness or whatever.. makes it feel like i'm getting somewhere. :D regular pushups don't do much for me anymore, although I still do them now and then. the biggest difference i noticed ever was my triceps getting muuuch more defined/bigger after doing the pushups where your hands are close together and you go all the way down till your face is practically on the floor. heh, those are still significantly harder than normal pushups...

We call those "heart to heart" pushups (make a heart shape with your hands and then lower your chest down). They hurt but are awesome for working out the tri's

As far as one handed push ups go, I can do the down part, the going up is another matter...

I'm starting off my exercise "program" by pushing down on my optical mouse a little harder.
That's my plan for this month....Maybe next month I'll move up a little bit by going back to
a regular ball mouse and maybe use some sandpaper for a mouse pad for greater resistance......
