I've been out of it for a bit, but I thought with Sandy Bridge you could go four bins above max on the non k chips.

Is that not true with Ivy or Haswell?

I was about to order, I don't really see the point in a k chip if I'm going to be forced to go air this time. I might as well save some money and get TSX and not have to worry about delidding.

Does that make sense to anyone? Aren't these chips just hitting 4.4-4.6 on Air anyways?

both sandy and ivy had the 4 bins above max turbo option as you can see here for ivy
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5871/intel-core-i5-3470-review-hd-2500-graphics-tested

also you could use the bclk OC (around 5%), so you could achieve almost 600MHz in a few occasions with a locked Ivy Bridge, with Haswell it's probably much lower (maybe 1/3?) since it's only the bclk OC (without the additional dividers you get with K Haswell)

the 4 bins, turbo OC thing was removed on Haswell.

even at 4.4GHz that's a significant clock advantage over a stock i5/i7 when all cores are loaded...
