It's often said that a factory scan tool(such as the type used by a dealership for specific brands) is unmatched by after market scan tools in the detailed information and amount of control you have over a vehicle being serviced.
My guess is that the amount of information given by the factory tool is unmatched not because of the hardware, but entirely due to the software that knows the proper sequence of sets of commands to issue in order to do specific diagnostics and an ability to turn the raw data from vehicle into that can be comprehended by techs.
