Can you determine if a paper was printed from a copier, printer, fax machine?

Is it possible to determine if a paper was printed from a photocopier, printer, or a fax machine? Just say someone handed you a print out letter and ask you to identify the machine that came out from? I can't seem to find any information about it on the internet.

Thanks

they all use the same laser engines these days, i think it would be difficult compared to years ago when they used different technologies

Well, it's pretty obvious if it's printed on fax paper or if it was printed with a laser or ink.
Usually copies are a bit lighter than an original.

Pretty simple to tell inkjet printer from laser printer print outs. It's hard to tell the difference between copier and laser printer though. A fax will usually have a footer saying it's a fax.
