Can you delete the hidden IBM partition?

Apparently the IBM laptops have a hidden partition, at least my suitemate tells me that. I reformatted..deleting the only partition that the Windows XP installation CD saw, then created a new partition..installed windows..etc. He had problems again later on..and the IBM tech support guys told him that the "X" parition is corrupted...

I thought maybe I needed another program to fully wipe the HD.

The special partition should only be necessary if you care to run the IBM recovery tools, I would also assume that deleting it would make the "Access IBM" button stop working.
