can you deactivate windows to put it on another computer

So I have an old laptop that I am replacing with a new desktop I am building. I would like to take the license key for laptop to the new desktop. I own the full retail version disk for installation.

Is this possible? Or are there additional steps that I must take to do this?

If the license (not just the disc) is a full retail license, then yes, you can do this. If it is an OEM license, then no.

As long as the key is full retail, should be no problem. If the key is OEM - it is a problem. Nothing to lose by giving it a try.

With full retail version, especially if it has been a long time since it was last installed, it usually reactivates with little or no trouble.
