Can you damage a flatbed scanner by not using the cover?

Just wondering, cause its a pain in the ass when the cover constantly screws up the alignment of the page.

No, but be sure that when you sit on the scanner to scan your ass-crack that you don't break the scanner!

😛

I think the cover is used so that you get a white background. If you don't use it, you'd just get a black background.

I've found that if you straddle w/o putting weight on it then yolu can get a good shot of the crack and the 'boys'...

Your scans will be worse.
for example, if you put something in the middle and scan without a lid it will be very strange looking and the background will be all black. The scanner calibrates itself to the white lid. If it's not there, the calibration is off and the scan will be weird.
But, unless you're doing it so you can put something heavy on it, I don't see how you could possibly damage it.

heh...a guy at work was sitting on a smooth top range yesterday before work. We always sit on them. There was about 20 of us sitting around talking when you heard this **POP!**

Yep, it broke. He real quick caught himself of the ranges that were on either side of him and all of us just sat there thinking, "HOLY SH!T, HE JUST FELL THROUGH A RANGE!!!" But no one moved for a couple seconds. Then it was like everyone realized what was going on at the same time and rushed over to help the guy. We couldnt help him though because the cooktop had shattered leaving jagged pieces pointed right at his legs, if he moved wrong or if is grip slipped from the other ranges he would have been seriously hurt. He ended up jumping down with only a couple small chunks stuck in his leg and a nice rip in his pants.
