If I'm only going to use one connector on and IDE (rounded) cable can I cut off the end connector and just use the middle one?

I have done this with both of my IDE(rounded) cables before and have had no problems.
I just make sure that I use a sharp X-acto knife blade, and try to make sure I get a good even cut
in one motion.
I now use the prefabed single device sivler mesh IDE (rounded) cables, just because I like the look better.

i would imagine it wouldn't be a problem if you just cut off the second one, tho i've never tried this before. personally, i'd leave my cables as is, especially ide cables so if you decide to add anotehr device, you wont' find uself having to purchase a new cable.

It works perfectly. I have done just that in my computers, and there have been no side effects.

Just confirming everyone elses opinions. It will work fine. Just slice it off right at the end of middle connector. This works great for floppy cables too. Just make sure you leave the twist in the cable.

You can also shorten the cable to the length you want by removing the connector and reattaching where you want it. It is a little tricky taking the connector off without breaking the tabs but it can be done.

yep will work fine. just make sure its a nice clean cut.
on floppy cables you can only cut the unused end on the motherboard side. (cause the floppy side has that twisty in it)

Yep exactly, make sure its a nice clean cut. If you have any 1-device IDE cables you will see that after the first connection the cable has been machine-cut, so as long as you do a good job (not that hard to do) it will work fine.

Perfectly said. In the place where I previously worked we used to do this all the time to cut down on case clutter.

Works great. And if you have a spare IDE plug around, you can put it on the bit you cut off and get a second cable...
