Can you control a laptop from a desktop?

I have my laptop on my desk in addition to my desktop. Can I controll my laptop through the network from my desktop. I dont want to remote desktop. I want to be able to see my mouse and type on the laptop without getting a kvm switch. Is this possible/reliable?
