Can you compose an email with Gmail without opening your inbox?

Sometimes i just want to start writing a quick message , and dont want to open up gmail and click compose. Is there a way to just open up a compose window straight from desktop.

I use Outlook with Gmail all the time and it works perfectly.

Hell I have been using Outlook for years, have mail dating back to 1999 in it, and it's never crashed.

Yes,go to settings and a few lines down is keyboard shortcuts,turn it on and C will bring up new message.

you must be on dial-up, theres no way opening a gmail window and then clicking compose is this big of a deal.
