speaking of which,93 Grand Cherokee, low pinion Dana 30 in front.

When i let off the gas at highway speeds(75->65mph), i get a howling out of the front end. Would this be the pinion bearing? The gears are meshing fine and look ok. I only notice it if i have the windows up and the radio somewhat low. How long can i drive on a bad pinion bearing until it locks up and my front end turns into a pile of trashed metal? My short term solution has been to open the windows and turn up the radio :p

Dayum, you're elite already! It's only been like 5 min! I guess I pull a lot of weight with the mods!

How do you know the gears are "Meshing" OK ?

Did you Dykem blue the teeth and check the contact pattern ?

Howling under deceleration is a sure sign of improper backlash.

checked the contact pattern and it is fine. The gears were set about 40,000 miles ago and this problem just started.

Your pinion gear has lost it's initial setting, most likely because the crush washer has lost it's tension.
Remove your driveshaft and axles and check the required torque to spin the gearset.

While your in the rear end, drag a small magnet through the fluid you drained out, look for small metal shavings, this will indicate damage to the teeth or bearings.

Ok...seriously now....what kind of oil do you recommend? How about oil filters?

I personally use Pennzoil with Wix filters.

For a while I used Mobil1 with the Wix filters but it just killed me to let my cars go more than 3k miles between oil changes. I don't care how damn good the oil is...it just bothered me. Hell it took me forever to stop changing at 2k miles and go to 3k.

Just curious what you think......

its my front end and it already has a magnet :D It is fine, not alot of metal in there. The rear end, on the other hand, could be used set up metal detectors everywhere. Planning to get the axle swapped in by the end of oct.
