Can you buy self-install rw drives for laptops?

I recently bought a laptop with just a cd rom drive to save a few dollars. Is it possible to buy a rw drive that installs as easily as those for desktops. I have not seen one anywhere. Does anyone know whether I could get one anywhere and what they are priced like? Thanks.

I can't vouch for installation, but my guess would be either it can't be to hard, or you would need a service tech to do it.

The prices are generally high compared to regular ide rom drives. I've seen rw's for i belive retail 150 bucks for a laptop version? I could be wrong, maby more maby less. . .but like I say that is retail. I know on ebay there are a few warehouse companies that are selling drives, depending on your laptop, for alot less money. Dirt cheap last time i checked.

Hope this helps,

Thanks that does help and I think it would be worth it. I will have some MSN Dollars available to spend when they become available, do you know of any stores that sell these? I have not been able to find any, but I wasn't exactly sure how to look. Shouldn't they be with the desktop burners? Thanks again.

You have two options really.

The first is to send your laptop away, or take it to a gateweay store or dell store, if that is your brand, and have them put one in. If space is not a concern per say, you can get an external drive which hooks up either by usb or usb2 or firewire if you have it. There are slim profile external drives but they cost some money last time i checked. All of these items can be bought from name brand places, and even your internal drives can be found on ebay.
