Can you buy old convertibles from the 60's or 70's cheap?

Which one would you buy? Let's say you have a budget between 3 and 4 grand. I've been thinking it would be fun to have a nice summer-car, but I don't know if it's worth-it, or if you can even get a good car in this price range? I'm thinking maybe an MGB Midget(did I that right), or maybe something similar? Performance wouldn't be my main concern, I would just want something semi-reliable.

I guess it would depend on where you live. BTW do you know what MG stands for?

There is an inherent contradiction between the two parts of your post that I have put in boldface type. A late 1960's-early 1970's British car with Lucas electronics will not be very reliable. Especially not for 3-4 thousand dollars. Now, I was in a similar situation as bought ($3,600) a 1976 Porsche 914. It's not a true convertible (targa top, so the rear window is fixed in place), but it's a fun little car and BOSCH is a touch more reliable than Lucas. Yes, it's a funny looking thing, but in my own informal polls about 90% of women think it's "cute" and ask for a ride in it, so it has that going for it. It's not fast (2.0 litre 4-cylinder), but it handles like a go-cart, absolutely wonderful. I bought mine as a driving restoration project. It needs a transmission rebuild and part of the floorpan (non-structural) needs replacing. I would say that to get a car of that vintage which has already been restored to a point at which it will not need special care above and beyond the typical old car care, you will need 6-8 thousand dollars.

Many of the late-60's early 70's muscle cars can be had for the amount stated as your budget. Check out Traderonline.com and browse through cars sorted by year and your price range...should give you some good ideas. I've been wanting to pick up a '69 Cutlass for a while now....would be a great top-down-driving-with-the-guys-to-the-golf-course weekend car.:D

As much as I personally like muscle cars too, people who are thinking about MG Midgets are not usually all that interested in a big muscle car. I could certainly be wrong, but that seems to generally be the case as I have observed it. The Cutlass is nice, but I'd rather have a 4-4-2. :)

Prolly true, I guess I was just projecting my own desire to own a land barge onto the thread.;)

BTW, a 442 is a Cutlass, IIRC. Just has the stump-puller engine in it rather than the regular 350.

OT- check out this bad boyfor sale not too far from me.....daddy like:D

My bad on the 4-4-2 thing. Let's hear it for the 455 though. :D As for the car in the link, very, very nice. Especially since it's got a new 403 under that hood. Someday I will find a '68-'72 L-89 'Vette though. That's what I'm heading for. 435 horses.....mmmmmmm (now where's that drooling icon?)
