I have always been worried that if I burn a CD, no other program must be running at the same time, or there will be errors and problems in writing and reading the CD.

Is this true and can you burn a CD while running other programs?

I guess that I am still accustomed to using a 2x CD-RW on a Pentium II but I really would like your opinions on this.

Depends on what you're doing I guess.

I'd imagine having winamp running and IE open wouldn't make too much of a difference, especially most burners come BurnProof anyways...

For my CD burner, the most I ever do is surf the net or talk on AIM. I've never tried running any other apps at the same time.

For my DVD burner, I don't use any programs.

I've never burned a coaster due to using my PC at the same time, even when I had my old non burn-proof burner.

I played BF1942 while burning a CD last night. No burn-proof on the drive, and it worked fine.

i have trouble when i do, which is why during my current rebuild, i am removing my CDR from my main desktop system
i will place my two burners into a seperate/older system, that will sit in the corner and when i need to burn something, i will go use the other system

but i don't have a uber/super new 52x burner and i don't burn many cd's

I've always owned SCSI burners, so I have always been able to do other things while I'm burning.

(A few weeks ago I burned a CD while playing Need For Speed Hot Pursuit.... on an Athlon 1400)

Yeah I am the same way, if I am burning a dvd I leave my computer alone, I need to get a faster computer so that I won't need to worry about getting an expensive dvd coaster.... well a $2 coaster anyways.

Reasonably fast CPU: check (Athlon XP 2000+)
Large amount of RAM: check (512MB)
Stable OS: check (Win2k)
Fast hard drive: check (9GB IBM 36LZX)
Good quality CD-rw w/ either burnproof or large cache: check (Yamaha CRW2100S, 8MB cache)

Yeah, burning while busy isn't a problem.

I always multi-task while burning CD's. Here are examples:

While burning CD(6 mins for my old school 12x :)):
1) Played CS
2) Download movies
3) Listen to MP3 while not playing CS
4) Chat on ICQ
5) Unzip files
6) Converted files

Although my plextor SCSI 12x burner dont have burn-proof technology on it, never have I encountered a coaster. :D This is on a all SCSI system and I can confirm that it is WAYYYYYY!!!! better than normal IDE sytems.

SCSI will allow you to use your machine and burn at the same time. Im too poor to go to scsi. Ill stick to listening to music while I burn, or reading email or something.

Depends on the computer and the burner... though I wouldn't try to play Unreal 2 or something while burning a CD no matter what you got.
