Can you build a case out of wood?

I've thought about it as a neat project. See my wife is really into the country furniture look for the house, which is fine with me, but my silver chieftec case doesn't look good with it all. Now you could say why don't I just build a cabinet with a door on it but thats not the point. I want to do something different. I thought about doing a wood case up nice to match all that "Lancaster, PA" furniture my wife buys. I take it as long as everything is grounded properly, I shoud be ok electrically. Now I do have 4 case fans, so I just have to make sure I place them properly so I don't overheat my system, that wood will sure hold in some heat If Im not careful!!

Suggestions anyone?

I did it, well kind of.. I used a dresser drawer once to build a PC in. It turned out fine ad was extremely quiet..

I saw one case made out of Lego blocks, so I don't know why wood wouldn't work.

BTW, if you make it, could you post a pic here of the final product?

Maybe you could contact Norm on New Yankee Workshop 😉

I wonder temperature wise, would it be better or worse than metal. It certaintly would be more quiet I would imagine.

Why not box in a good metal case with a wood cover? Choose one with a removeable face bezel that you can rebuild in wood.
Just a suggestion.🙂

Yeah, I don't see why not, but my concerns would be:

1) EMI shielding?
2) Temp
3) unlikely, but risk of fire.

I would just work on an encasement for a simple aluminum case, or maybe just face a case with wood...

A friend of mine has one for his P4 mega machine. All the tricks 1 gig ram 4 7200rpm drives, cr-rom, cd/dvd-rom cdrw, Ti4600, ... He's a cabnet maker by trade and last year got a bit bored. Took 1 month to build to ATX standards with over 500 seperate items by his count. He is a bit of a perfectionist, so, it had to be perfect. He made it out of cherry and it has a nice satin finish! Testing showed a 5 degree rise in temp, so he added some vents and another fan. The darn thing is still quieter then a mouse and looks like a extremely fine piece of furniture. I ask him if he would build one for me, he'll only charge me 1200 dollars! :Q
