I'm planning an upgrade:

Core 2 Duo E6550
Asus p5k-vm
and 2gb of Corsair twin2x-6400c4 memory

In the interest of spending no more money than necessary, i would like to keep my ide hard and optical drive.
However reading around the internet, i got the idea that, since the ICH8 and ICH9 chips no longer support pata, you need a sata drive to boot from motherboards thus equipped.

is this correct?

Board should come with at least one IDE port. That should take care of your PATA HDD and optical drive. Set the optical drive as the 1st boot in BIOS and you're set to install windows.

it may or may not work. depends on the board and which pata i/o chip its using and how its all setup.

if you really want to make sure itll work.. buy a sata drive OR a ide to sata bridge board

No problemo with my sample P5K. BTW, the Abit IP35 Pro is a better board. The major issue with the Abit is 1394 throughput speed (14.4MB/s).
