Is it possible to backup DVD's and burn them to a CD? And if so what are good programs to do it with. I have a couple i wanna make backups of but haven't got a clue about it.

You will have to extract it onto your computer and compress it as VCD. Significant loss in quality, thus not a whole lot better than backing up onto a videotape.

Why would you want to back-up? I don't backup every single VHS tape or DVD video's. In other words, do you legally own the DVD's you are looking to copy?

Ya i have some Disney DVD's that are the kids, want to make backup copy's and let them watch those.... You know how kids are with things, and i don't want to replace the DVD when it gets scratched all to hell....

DVD2SVCD is the program you want. Set it up..shove the DVD in the drive and it does everything including making the cue and bin files. Make sure your player can play SVCD's though.

EDIT: After reading your post again, if you just have a couple to back up then its not really worth learning how to do it. There is a lot of information to learn and it can be a pain in the arse sometimes. Best idea in your situation is to buy another copy or put them on VHS somehow.

If it's for back up, and you're gonna use compression... you may as well convert them to an mpeg4 format instead for better compression/ quality. You can make comparable quality to the original fit on 2cd's with full quality audio. You can check out guides for Nandub, and mpeg4v2, and divx encoding at doom9.net If you just want to back up the files with full quality you should be able to find a tool to break them into smaller pieces there too.

I doubt he wants to use DivX because he won't be able to play them on a regular DVD player. VCDs should play without problem, and maybe SVCD. (use SVCD if you can)

Just make sure your DVD player can read CDR. Here's a good place with tutorials.
