Goto:
Start \ Settings \ Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
Select the tab labeled Hardware Profiles.
You will see that there is currently only one profile and that it named Original Configuration.
Click onto the line Original Configuration so that it becomes highlighted and click the Copy button

A new window will open called Copy profile with a From: and To: section.
In the To: area type <Name>, then click OK.
You should now see your newly created profile alongside your existing one, click OK to finish

After you setup your profile, you need to restart your computer before the changes can take effect.
Each time you restart your computer you will be faced with a message:

"Windows can't determine which hardware state you are in, please select one of the following"

1. Original Configuration
2. <your config Name>

I do not know of a way to automatically load the profile.

yeah me neither. i deleted two registry keys that have to do with the 2nd profile but i basically keep getting that same screen with the exception that the name of the 2nd profile gets set to "unkown profile." i know with windows xp its pretty simple but im not sure if theres a way to do it in windows 98
