Can XP Pro convert from single to dual CPU capability

I am thinking of changing the CPU in my system from a single Athlon 64 to the dual core version. I am running XP Pro and it is a nice, clean, stable installation still. If I change out the CPU will I have to reload for the OS to recognize and change the kernel to the dual CPU configuration? I hate to do that if I can convert without a reload so would like to hear from the "experts" what will be required. Thanks.

you won't need to do anything, it should just work.

To verify go into task manager and make sure it's got 2 processors under the 'Performance' tab.

Worked great for me, going from a 3000+ to an X2 3800+ On bootup, WinXP did its little New Hardware Detected balloon, saying it had detected an ACPI MultiProcessor PC and that the hardware was installed but might not work properly until a reboot. Reboot, zoom, Premiere Elements encode times chopped in half and multitasking smoothness >> before Go for it!
