Can XP Home support a Core 2 Duo...

Yes. XP Home supports one processor socket with an unlimited amount of physical cores or logical processors (hyperthreading).
 
Yes, as stash has said, MS moved to a physical socket count for procs so the number of cores doesn't matter. You can run a quad core on home if you like.
