Can Word97 read Word XP docs?

I have a spare PII 400mhz computer with 2gig hd. I'm going to give to this a college friend.

My WinXP image will not fit on 2gigs, but my Win98 image does. the problem is that the win98 image has Office97 and the college is using OfficeXP.

Can Word97 read WordXP docs? If not, what do i need to be able to read it?

Generally, yes. But it depends on how Word XP saves the .doc. It can save it even as .RTF where it can be read by WordPad. Also, you can download and use a Word vier - free from Microsoft.
