can winxp x64 be installed from dos?

i've done this with winxp, but i can't seem to figure out how to do it with x64. my cd burner is damaged, so i extracted the setup files onto a spare hard drive. win98 was installed on that drive which allows me to get to a dos prompt.

in winxp i used to be able to run winnt.exe from the i386 folder in dos to begin the installation, but that file is not present in the x64 version.

I think you need to burn the ISO and boot from the CD. There may be boot disks available on floppies, but I'm not sure.

getting to dos is not the problem. i'm just not sure how to initialize the setup from dos. with regular winxp, i just went to the i386 folder and ran winnt.exe. i can no longer do this with x64, as it's not present.

try to run whatever the autorun file shows, which is usually setup.exe in the root directory of the cd

now i know buying a new burner would be the easy way out, but i'd really like to figure out a solution for educational purposes.

is there any way to boot from an iso file on the hard disk to perhaps emulate a boot cd?

actually there is !!!! if you install VMWare workstation you could tell it to use SIO image as a virtual CD drive for the virtual machine, and also use a raw disk partition to install Windows under VMWare. After that is done you can boot the Windows partition you created using VMWare, directly from a boot loader without VMWare. This partition should be bootable, but you may need to do it in safe mode, and then install whatever real device drivers you may need (instead of the VMWare virtual device drivers). So first you need a host OS that you can run VMWare under, such as Linux. Linux can be installed using a ISO file !!! problem solved !!!!

actually I wasn't really serious as it's WAY too much trouble to go thru just to install Windows........can't you hook up an external CDROM or something, even temporarily ?

Yeah, I'd rip one out of a system and just hook it up to install XP. Who cares what speed it is or if it's a burner as long as it works.

i ordered an nec3520a.

couldnt get vmware to install. can't get a lot of things to install. this is part of the reason i'm wiping my o/s and installing the x64 version.

hey, is there any way to do this with wingrub? i don't see why not.

i'm just not sure how i'd go about settings it up to do so. all the tutorials are catered toward knoppix
