Can Windows Repair Itself By Itself?

Hello members,

Can anyone tell me what can cause something as simple as a reboot to get rid of the blue screen of death? I installed Windows 98 SE over itself to stabilize it but was greeted with many blue screen error messaages and GPF's upon reboot. But each time I rebooted (cold, of course), the blue screens would disappear one by one until finally Windows booted up fine without any error messages at all. In otherwords, it seems to have fixed itself. What happens to cause this and has anyone else noticed this? I feel like came out smelling like a rose.

You realize that Microsoft doesn't support 98 anymore right? My friend....its time to upgrade (or update for that matter)

Actually, my main OS is Windows XP sp1 and I am trying to hold on to Windows 98SE (dual boot, separate partitions) to run some old programs that won't run on XP. But I am beginning to think I would be better off just to purchase the upgraded versions of those same programs for Windows XP because of Windows 98SE's instability. As a matter of fact, I have already mail ordered Linux Mandrake 9.2 to replace Windows 98SE, and also will try to preserve the dual boot feature. I know nothing about Linux but I hear it is quite stable. I'd like to take a break from Microsoft for a while, no offence intended.

Here's a tip for Windows XP users...

If you feel that the Windows XP operating system might be corrupted, you can put the XP CD in the Rom drive, and when auto play launches, click exit.

Then go to start, run, in that space, type "sfc /scannow" it will compare all windows files to those on the CD and replace any that are corrupt. This is a slow process, but a fairly painless repair.

Just a logical question....

WHY DO YOU NEED WIN98SE OR LINUX IN YOUR MACHINE!!??

Just wondering. I really think that if you have WinXP Pro that you shouldn't worry about having an additional OS (in the Win family) unless you run Linux-based programs.

Just a shot in the dark here...but could it be...um because he has programs that wont work in WinXP?

And as an FYI : I dont NEED any other OS on my machine. Just like I dont NEED my car or my computer. I can easily accomplish everything I want in one OS, be it Linux or Windows. It is a preference thing.
