Can Windows 7 update force a restart?

I'm curious because some updates happened and I woke up to my PC at the login screen with no warning of a bad shutdown or restart etc...

Just curious, it's probably the case but confirmation that my PC is stable and there wasn't a wonky reboot for no reason is always nice ;)

Yes, depending on how your system is configured, updates will install and reboot your system automatically.

I'm fairly sure I set it to ask me but I also setup download and install schedules weekly at 4am. Maybe that schedule reboots the PC too. I'll take a look.

Thanks :)

It does and it likes to do it when your back is turned, Had it happen a few times when I have a complex job almost finished in Photoshop and not saved, I come back from filling my cup and find it at the log on screen.

Its one of the other few anoyances Im to lazy to adjust.

The out of cycle update rebooted for me. Reminded me to change to download/ask.
