Can Windows 7 output audio over HDMI and SPDIF at the same time?

Can Windows 7 output audio over HDMI and SPDIF at the same time?

I need to send SPDIF (Toslink/optical) audio to my A/V receiver, but I'd also like to send HDMI to my upstairs TV but I need it to include audio.

It seems like Windows 7 can't output to two devices at the same time like that but please correct me if I'm wrong or if you can help me out...

Until recently, the way that you got NVidia video cards to add sound to the HDMI video signal was by hooking up the (non-optical) SPDIF audio output on the motherboard to a two-conductor cable that is attached to two pins on the video card.

So if you have an NVidia card with HDMI (except for the very latest series), then it'd certainly seem possible.

Also, does your A/V receiver or the TV have a digital sound passthrough output?

You can find splitters for optical or coaxal digital on monoprice or probably dealextreme too. I remember the optical splitters actually werent that expensive. So if need be you could split the optical and then send one to the receiver and then another to the tv upstairs if it will take it...

thats if you cant do what the guy above is suggesting

What are you using for a sound card ? Some drivers will let you do it in windows 7. The way sound is handled in windows 7 is my least liked change. XP would allow you to output to multiple devices but 7 wants to specify a single output.

What software are you using to play back the video ? Another option might be to use something like FFDShow for audio and setting it up to split the stream into two outputs.

Ms needs to listen to its consumers and make some changes to the audio, as I posted in another thread, they want the sound the way it is and nothing is going to change it.
