i have a Win98 First Edition OEM that came with a DELL computer...i was wondering if i can do a FULL CLEAN INSTALL using it?

1) Create two files of 1 K size (put returns in them) - one called
win.com and the other called win386.exe put them on the boot floppy in the dir names listed below
2) Make a /Windows directory (doesnt have to be but easier to remember)
3) Copy the fake win.com file there
4) Make a /Windows/System directory (does need to be system under the
directory you create)
5) Copy the fake win386.exe there
6) boot with your floppy and then run setup and when it asks for proof you own windows point it to the floppy

The OEM version of Win98 that ships with Dell PCs is a full version that will even boot off the CD. That should be all you need to do for a clean install.

I've done a bunch of fresh Win98SE installs with OEM versions. I find the easiest way is to boot the system with a Win98SE startup disk with format.com copied to it, fdisk & format the target drive, create a directory on it to store the setup files (\Win98 on the CD), copy all of the files from the \Win98 directory on the CD to the directory you created, then run setup from that directory. You'll never be prompted for that CD again! 🙂 But to answer your question... Yep!
