I run a few P2 266's with 128mb/ram, and they take about 12 minutes to fully start up to the logon screen, and another 5 to completely log in...

According to Microsoft, W2K requires a minimum of 64MB of ram in order to even load up. 128MB is the "recommended amount."

I've run Win 2k on a p 133 w/ 40MB of RAM. It'll run, but like I said it will be painfully slow.

I believe it will run on 48MB but will not install on a machine with 48MB RAM.

Get this friend of yours an early birthday present. Buy him some RAM.

I'm assuming you're talking to me? It wasnt a laptop, it was an old IBM desktop system that we used as a crashbox. We rarely rebooted (always just left it logged in and running) but I'd wager it took somewhere in the neiboorhood of 5-8min. to get you to the login screen and another 5 to log in and finish loading.

I know for sure that SP2 and earlier will actually allow you to install it on a machine with 32MB of RAM. I'm not sure about SP3 and later...

Agreed, or better yet get him a new computer.

Actually now that I think about it I tried to do a Win 2K SP4 install on an old P100 laptop w/ 32MB of RAM in hopes that it would make an okay video switcher controller. I ended up giving up on it when I stared the install one day and let it sit than came back the next and it still hadnt finished...

I got win2k on a p166 with 64mb. Runs my weather station software and small web server with php (light duty). Works great. I even do a little web browsing when I'm at the station from time to time and don't notice any speed problems. System does have a modern 120gb hard drive though, so I'm sure that helps speed the swap file along quite a bit.
