Hi!

Does anyone know if Win 98 SE handle more than 128 MB? I've got 196 MB on my system and it seem to help when performing multitasking but not in single apps. Is there only 128 allocation units limiting or something like that????

when you say that it is not helping for single apps, what do you mean? Are you saying that you don't see any speedup in single apps? If this is what you mean, this is normal. Unless that one applicatiion uses a lot of memory (like Photoshop), additional memory may not make it run faster.

The amount of memory that any computer can have depends on the motherboard design, not windows 98/ SE or ME.

32-bit Windows is suppose to be able to access up to 2 gigs RAM.

32-bit addressing is capable of handling 4GB.

Win98SE can happily handle up to 512MB....recently it has been shown that Win9x chokes on anything more than 512MB without a vcache workaround.

Hi again!

Sorry, I didn't mean "handle", was a bad word. Lot of people has recommended me not to spend too
much money on RAM memory, as a Win-98 system won't benfit from it to increase performance. (In contrast to Win2k and Linux)

When I'm running racingcar 3Dgames, the main difference in performance is spotted when going from 64MB to 128 MB, but not notisable much when going from 128MB to 196MB.

I thought this must be a linkage somewhere between the performance kick and the EFFECTIVE RAM handling...:D

Windows 9x can technically handle upto 2GB of RAM. Please read ALL of this thread and follow the links to microsoft.com. If anyone here disagrees with the 2GB limit, please take up the debate with microsoft.

I have found that for most purposes, the upgrade from 32-64MB makes the biggest difference with WIN98SE, and that from 64-128MB makes a big difference as well, but for most purposes, you will not benefit much from more than 128MB, unless you have a LOT of programs open and running.

You might wanna do the registry hack that forces win9x to use up all physical RAM before going to the swap space... With that you might be able to see more performance increase...

Do a search of these forums on how to do this... it had been covered before...

Go to your Windows directory and edit the SYSTEM.INI file. Under the [386Enh] section, add the line:

ConservativeSwapfileusage=1

then save and close the file and reboot the computer and your system will be much 'smarter' in its use of your memory..

win98se will be able to handle memory up to 768 mb (Q184447 of MS knowledge base), but will only use up to 512 mb for disk cache (Q253912)
