Can Win 98 install on Win 7 vMachine?

I would like to build a legacy machine to run some old games but I have another machine running Win 7 64bit and was wondering how well windows 98 would install on a virtual machine?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I have it running in VM, no 3D acceleration; everything else works

you'll have to boot to DOS and format the drive as FAT32 and made partition active

I don't even have a floppy drive to make a DOS boot drive. Without 3D acceleration the games I would like to play wouldn't even work.

DOS CD ROM ISO images are available on the 'net. No need for floppies.
Windows' own VM software does not support 3D acceleration... others may.

I know VMware has 3D Support back to XP. I really didn't look at see what vmware tools had for the video card in 98.

Microsoft Direct X does not support gaming in a VM but I do know they are working on it.

I bypass that issue by using that remote desktop program that used to be heavily marketed on TV and you can run anything.... Dang... I want to say teamspeak but thats not it.

Use oracle's virtualbox (it's free) since it will emulate an soundblaster16,with vmware you won't have sound since you (probably)won't be able to find an sound driver for your modern card.
Once you have installed 98 you will have to run scitech's display doctor, now free, to have anykind of decent display, otherwise you will be running in pretty much safemode graphics.
