Can widgets be turned off easily?

I'm looking at starting to use widgets. I'm not sure exactly what I'll do with them but the stuff at http://widgets.yahoo.com looks pretty cool.

It is my understanding that many widgets rely on a constant connection to the internet and the movement of data across that connection. I just want to verify that this data movement is easy to stop. I'm assuming that you simply turn the widget off and all data movement ceases. Is that the case?

Are there any good widgets out there that you have found fun and useful?

Thanks

Yeah, they don't really use that much power.

I use Konfabulator (old version) still, & unless you have limited RAM, i don't notice them affecting anything.

Yes you can shut each widget down separately. If you shut down the widget engine entirely, they all disappear. I would advise shutting down the widget engine before running a game. Running widgets can cause flickering blocks in-game whenever they update their display.
