Can we talk about how hopelessly outdated laundry machines are?

Just had to add (since so many of you agreed with this post): My apt complex just installed brand new, straight from the factory washing machines and dryers. All brand new. And they're still quarter-only. So much for that theory.

K.I.S.S. Keep it simple, stupid. The coin mechanism is very simple. A card reader is:

  • subject to more vibration than in most other applications
  • subject to more moisture
  • subject to swings in temperature

There's a joke in there but I'm not the kind to tell such jokes.

Somehow every other type of vending machine in the world seems to be managing these perilous elements ok...

Because soda machines spin bottles of soda around at however many rotations per minute while soaking them in water and soap.

?

How is that even remotely the point? And furthermore, when I was in college (which was some years ago now), our dorm laundry machines were card operated. You could swipe a credit card or your student ID card. Again, they seemed to manage the elements just fine.

PS-Also, my city has also recently begun getting rid of coin-operated parking meters, replacing them with machines that print tickets after you feed them cash (any kind) or a credit/debit card.

Question -
Our washer broke so I'm going to a laundromat. Last time I used a laundromat, detergents came only in powder form. :p

Are laundromat washers compatible with liquid detergents?

I called, but was unable to communicate with the (Hindi?) speaker who answered the phone.

Yes, it's fine.

Why wouldn't they be? I've seen some dubious restrictions regarding powder detergent on private machines, but I don't see how liquid could negatively affect anything.
