Can we stop with all the FDNY and NYPD tributes already!?!

September was a tragedy. Innocent people died. Rescuers died. Enough already. I wish the bowl game sponsors would stop drumming all this melodramatic recognition of firefighters and police! They are just people doing their jobs. Enough already.

we hear it in NYC...

you might not hear it much outside, because the 3,000+ that perished were at work. they got trapped.

the firefighters and police and emt and other emergency personnell were safe. they were outside. they DID NOT have to go into a collapsing building.

but they did.

that's what makes them stand out.

Still breaks our hearts here in NYC.

I lost a friend, he was in tower 1, around the 90th floor, with Cantor Fitzgerald.
We still do not know what happened to his body. His family does not have anything to bury.

I attended the Phoenix Coyotes game tonight against the New York Rangers. Members of the NYPD and the FDNY came to the game and when they were introduced inbetween plays, they recieved a huge standing ovation from everyone in the arena. Good to see people like Madrat weren't there. It was still touching to see people recognize what they did this far away from the tragedy.

It was their job to help and with that job you take risks. The poor minimum wage sap serving coffee on the top floor did not take his job knowing that there was a chance of death or serious injury. They also did not know it was collapsing at the time or else they would not have set up triage(sp) in the lobby.

Maybe you would feel different if you were somehow personally affected by these things. For those of us that live in and around NYC, we are reminded of it all the time. There isnt a day that goes by when I dont stop to look at the place where the WTC once stood. The people that were lost and those that risked and lost their lives to save them will never be far from my thoughts. The event happened less than four months ago, even as I type that, it seems wierd to me, its almost as if the event happened years ago. I dont want to forget, I dont want to stop paying tribute.

if you've ever been down by the WTC site, whenever a body is found, it is given a heroes honor guard. The flag is draped over the body, and it is escorted out of the site. Work stops as everyone pays their respect.

It does not matter if it was a member of the services, or an employee. Its all the same respect.


You have not truly felt sadness in your heart until you've witnessed that.

Gee wiz, maybe the first hundred freakin' thousand times people were sincere. Last h.s. basketball game I went to (last weekend) where they saluted the firefighters it was pretty obvious that people are numb to the cause. I can definitely tell you right now that I cannot pay any more respect to the NYPD/FDNY. Enough is enough. We all roll out of bed every day knowing that leaving our house is dangerous. We leave because life moves on. Its not uncaring to leave your family to go to work, especially knowing that for any given reason on this day one of you may not make it to tomorrow. Its not because we don't care, its because we need to move on with our lives. Now its time for them to move on.

I think that what MadRat is trying to say is that the media and others are taking this tragedy a bit too far. I can remember everyone jumping down Charolette Church's back b/c she said something against the NYFD. I mean, she basically said that she did see why NYFD members were coming over to England and handing out awards at banquets and stuff. And I agree, WTF do they have to do with English awards ceremonies? But of course Americans bashed her for that.

What MadRat is saying is that the media has pushed pictures, footage, audio, video of the NYFD till people can't take it anymore. You know how people were all upset when Princess Diana died. And everyone was upset for the first couple of weeks, then people started getting tired of it after the upteenth time they showed it on TV? And then the little porcelan dolls and the TV specials and made for TV movies? There's only but so much that people can take of a tragedy. Some people don't want to be reminded of it day after day after day. I'm sorry for the losses that occurred, and lives forever changed, but I DO NOT care to see every function in the US made out to be a memorial to fire and police officers. They were just doing their job. They do their jobs to save lives, not to be plastered on the TV 24-7. What about all of the fire and police officers that died before 9-11? They get jack squat.

It's kind of how I'm tired of hearing God Bless America and seeing flags everywhere I turn. We've always had an American flag outside our home (even before 9-11), but now it's a big fad to have flags plastered all over the place and sing GBA on a whim.

I don't know if you've ever ordered a Big New Yorker from Pizza Hut or not. Before 9/11 it had the NY skyline on the box. I guess I hadn't eaten their pizza in 3 months, cause when I went to pick up another one, the box had a new design, and I asked the employee about it. She said that they had changed all their boxes so as to not anger people.

This is not about being insensitive. It's about how a lot of functions are being turned into recognition for the NYFD and NYFD.

It SHOULD NOT be about recognition. That shouldn't matter to the NYFD or NYFD, that's what they live to do. They live and work to save lives. I think that something is lost from that when they continue to pop up all over the place like "Where's Waldo" Then it's not about NYFD/NYPD the public protectors, it's about how much air time can we get.

You're missing the whole point. We all know that the NYFD and NYPD members are ALL heros and were doing their jobs to save lives. But we DO NOT need constant reinforcement of that idea on a continual basis.
