It's not supposed to be available until the 14th? My distributors have had it for a month. I just ordered a copy in last week to test out.

HMM...didn't know they had that kind of lag. Must take a long time to print those pretty boxes.

If you want Winme now,it is available to oem's like Russ and myself. The oem version that we can supply will have more features than retail AND if you purchase a system from dealers like Dell or Gateway or such that preload WinMe,you will not get a cd and will have to call AND utilize that manufacturer for all service to your OS.
I just got back from a Microsoft Tech Fair where what I have just said was told to us oems.
By buying your system from someone like Russ or myself or other OEM mom and pop shops, you will get the cd with your purchase as well as more features and benifits.
Support your local computer dealer. You not only get the advantage of knowledgable, personal service, you have the advantage of getting the best software first.:)

Will ME be a full install, upgrade or both? Anyone know? Looks really nice and I love the pinball game they give you. ;) Actually people say there are additional 3D extensions in ME...anyone hear this?

Wingnut,

It is (or will be) available in both upgrade and full install. It doesn't really look like much of an upgrade from 98SE, though. Larger driver database, boots and runs quicker, but not a hell of a lot more.

KDOG,

If an end user, yes, you can only purchase it with qualifying hardware. If a reseller, you can buy it from any DSP. There are a dozen of them.

The copies I have are full installs. It is a completely different way of installing the OS in this version. The cd does not come with a boot disc. You must create a boot disk from the cd first thing,as I was told.I tried installing the OS without the boot disc and it failed.I will try again tommorow with the boot disc.
I have not heard of "additional" 3d extensions.I believe that is a function of manufacture of the cpu.

The system configuration backup/restore feature will be handy for the newbies. That's about it ...

As for the original question, several places are accepting orders for it right now.

Ex. Computers4sure has it for $47.90 for Win98 users. There are actually three retail versions ... nobody could ever accuse Micro$oft of being too simplistic.

Soybomb,

As is the case with all Microsoft "boot" features, it's a crap shoot from drive to drive. Same problem with the boot floppies they shipped with previous versions of Windows.

Ohhhhh good point russ.....at the lab we have to boot it off the burner or it wont boot. But it wont load off the burner, after it starts to load we have to swap it to teh cdrom to continue :)

That may be very true.My failure may be becuase of this SUCK MSI 6191 mobo I want to shove up my suppliers ARS!:(.I am going to try on a different sytem tommorow. The Techfair was all about creating custom installs and the boot disc you create has the real mode drivers to load the system.I am still reading up on the process.

RUSS, TRIPLESHOT: Can't find it on either of your websites. Price? Whats the minimum hardware purchase to get it?

Russ, Tripleshot...

thanks for the info! :) The additional 3D extension thing didn't make much sense to me either. I was guessing this guy must be talking aboput an improved DirectX or something but anyway it still looks and sounds good to me but the install method sounds a little difficult. Hopefully this is something fixed before the official release date.

I dont think anything else is gonna be done, I dont have arelease candidate, it went gold, I think we've got teh final release, until the revision a few months down the line hehe. (Windows ME B?) I dont think the install will be that bad for most 'peeps either.

Usually, a qualifying purchase for an OS is a CPU/MB combo, HDD, or full system. Graphics cards and the like don't qualify, AFAIK.

Tripleshot,

Not yet. It's been sitting on my back bench while I've been spending all my spare time trying to beat Apache in to submission on my server. Maybe I'll screw with it tomorrow.

Chooie,

That has been the license agreement up until now. I haven't had time to read the ME agreement yet, though.

I intend to do the same.I just went through my bag of goodies from the Techfair and found RC1.It reminded me that OCT 1st, all RC1 WinMe os's die. I will give that disc to a local shop here.I need to get up to speed on this winMe.It will be the norm very soon.It is (believe it or not) supposed to be very, very, stable and it does have some really cool features. They just might not be what I have nee for now,but I will need to know about it anyway.
EDIT..........................................................

I just read the liscense terms for WinMe.They are standard. (complete sys or hdd or mobo/cpu combo or unassembled sys.)

Well, in the interest of science, and because I really didn't need to go home and sleep anyway, I'm doing an install right now. So far, looks just about like 98SE. BTW, I used one my homemade Windows 98 boot disks to prepare the drive. Strangely enough, the .cab files on the ME CD are in a directory called win9x.
